Approximately two-thirds of the parking lot at Putnam County Golf Course has been paved bringing this year’s stately renovations at the year-round facility to a close. The work, which included grading and drainage improvements and the construction of stone pillars and wrought iron fencing, was funded through the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation East of Hudson Watershed program.

Incredibly, over its long history, the once private and now first-rate 18-hole golf club’s parking lot had never been paved. General Manager Mike McCall said this particular upgrade will bring the club up to par with any banquet facility in the area.

“The curb appeal of the club has been greatly enhanced. It’s another element of what I call the first-rate and distinguished renaissance of Putnam County Golf Course,” said McCall.

McCall explained that the final third of the expansive parking area, that which is furthest from the clubhouse itself, will have pavers installed under which will be a water storage area.

“All the water goes into there, underground, and into a water storage area where the water will percolate into the ground, preventing run-off onto any roadway,” McCall said.

“This particular project examples the successful partnership and collaborative efforts between the DEP and my administration,” said County Executive MaryEllen Odell who was joined at the Mahopac facility by Putnam’s Commissioner of Highways and Facilities Fred Pena. Together they inspected the work and discussed the progress made at the club over the last year. The final touches which will be added early in 2014 will include new outdoor lighting.

“As a County legislator and now as the CountyExecutive, I have always believed that in order to be a competitive venue in the banquet industry, we needed to upgrade the parking lot to include paving and easier access with better lighting – and with zero cost to our taxpayers,” Odell said. “Now we’ll have it.”

The renovated club has become a popular destination spot noted for its live music and affordable dinner events. The club recently held a special Wine and Cheese Party offering special close-out prices on selected Pro Shop apparel and equipment. It will play host to Santa Claus on Saturday, Dec. 21 at 10 a.m. and to close out the year, will hold a Comedy Night on Friday, Dec. 27 featuring Vic DiBitetto, Tommy Gooch and Fred Rubino. A buffet dinner will be served at 7 p.m. with the show beginning at 8. Tickets are $40 per person. Reserved tables are available. For more information, call (845) 808-1880.
